I ended up just making a page called lokivanishes that has the forum information (and can contain other information we collect in the future.) It makes for easier linking because "lokivanishes" is referenced on several other pages--I just turned the plaintext into links to this new page. -BrianEnigma 14:24, 3 January 2007 (PST)
If converted from Hexadecimal to Decimal, the number 6B617261 (left after solving all the answers in /more_answers) becomes 1801 548 385 - which looks a lot like a telephone number. Does not connect in Australia, could someone in the USA have a go? -Ragnarok

* A mysterious ad on the IE Blog leads to a countdown timer
* The Countdown page asks for keys.
** Several Keys have been found by using any of five cipher keys, either posted online or sent to bloggers.
** Several keys were solved by using the contents of a Puzzle Box Package, mailed to various people. The contents include a video.
** These keys have frequently been accompanied by extravagant gifts (laptops, media center computers, etc.) from Loki, the "Enigma Director", and all come from Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond, WA.
* The countdown expires Jan 8th 2007 at 6:30PM PST. A decompile of the Flash app on the main page reveals the location as the fountains in front of the Bellagio. This time and location coincides with the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. It is expected that this is when the game will officially start.
* Several new countdowns are behind a particular key, listing various cities and times of additional live events.
* A new video from lokivanishes is discovered on YouTube, giving a new key.
* The rules page lists a secret Meta Puzzle with an instant-win prize for the first to solve it. The prize is their name inscribed on each of a new AMD processor model to be released soon. Several clues in the puzzles, events, and in the original video could relate to the Meta Puzzle.
* Another clue from Loki surfaces at the bell desk of The Orleans hotel in Vegas, pointing to the location the event at the Bellagio Fountains.
* All of the events now have GPS coordinates. They are noted here on the Countdowns page.
* Jan 8th 2007: The Las Vegas Event has occurred, giving us a Video and Puzzle Box 1 has been unlocked. After all the puzzles are solved, Loki gives us a video: loki_time . At the end of the video a url is flashed on the screen pointing to a side contest to get your name printed on AMD Athlon 64 FX processors. Thus begins the Meta Puzzle.
The invitation was presented on the website. It gave instructions to RSVP via e-mail to vanish@vanishingpointgame.com with "yes" in the body. When all the words are found, only 6B617261 is left. Screenshots , , ,
*At the end of the video for solving puzzle box four the link '/roamingroaming' is given. The page is a clue to some place if you follow the distances from an unknown source. The word "TANLI" is at the bottom of the page, which I assume is "LATIN". Maybe the starting place is ROME?
*The video for solving puzzle box four asks you to visit '/lokiv'. This provides a video for the final part of the meta puzzle. Four Lokis sit in four directors' chairs and ask you to find their name(s). See lokiv for further information.
I have no more puzzles to give you and it's time for me to disappear, but don't worry... vanishing is what I do best. Even as a child, I thought it was hilarious when I hid in the dresser draw and my mother couldn't find me. I rolled around in the soot of the fireplace and stood perfectly still for hours. Solved by Wynn from unfiction.com forums.<br>

The boxes on the paper represent the Great Pyramids with the point in the top left corner being the "vanishing point". By overlaying a map of the pyramids such as found, here, you get the following:<br>
<br>
Look at the inside and the outside arc. They cross through the following letters:
TIFNIEOMSTRN<br>

Contributed by InsaneProdigy:
Taking the original yo-yo trick hieroglyphs as they are laid out in the puzzle image, we can replace them with the letters that are crossed from their names in the diagram. This gives: <br>
<pre>
T    S   MI   I   F
N   OT    R   N   E
</pre>
Hieroglyphs can be written either left to right or right to left. The bird on the right side of the image is facing left which is the standard notion that the glyphs are to be read right to left. However, this doesn't quite look right. My guess is that the blank in the bottom row should have been in that position on the top row and the middle top row should have been on the bottom row at the far right. This would give: <br>
<pre>
T    S    R   I   F
N   OT    N   E   MI
</pre>
Reading from right to left, this can clearly be seen as FIRST on the top line and MENTION on the bottom line.

The first hit of the search for FIRST MENTION yo-yo says:(search)
"The first historical mention of the yo-yo, however, was from Greece in the year 500 B.C."

The answer then, is <b>"Greece"</b>.
Hint: "People and dates with lasting effect."

The initials on the mural correspond to the names of the inventors, most of whose whose inventions depicted:

*EW = Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin 1794
*HD = Humphrey Davy - Demonstrated electric lamp to the Royal Society - 1806
*JW = John Whitehurst - Pulsation Engine (hydraulic pump) - 1722 other possible answer James Watt - Improved steam engine - 1763
*BF = Benjamin Franklin - Pointed light rod conductor - 1752
*GLL = George Louis Lesage - Used a single wire system to telegraph a message - 1774
*LP = Louis pasteur - Process of sterilizing milk - 1862
*GS - George Stephenson - Locomotive - 1814
*GM = Guglielmo Marconi - Radio - 1901
*AGB = Alexander Graham Bell - Phonophone (or more commonly, the telephone) - 1880
*CM = Cyrus McCormick - Inventor the Reaper - 1809
*TE = Thomas Edison - Invented phonograph - 1877

The San Francisco picture shows 3 items above the same starburst(?) pattern: A locomotive (invented by George Stevenson/GS), a telephone (invented by Alexander Graham Bell/AGB); both represented in the mural. The only one not represented is the statue of Poseidon, whose son is TRITON. ((Great! What does that have to do with the puzzle?))

The puzzle clearly indicates that dates are somehow significant "PEOPLE AND DATES WITH LASTING EFFECT". The complication I ran into were that dates attributed to the inventions shown are very sketchy in many cases. When I decided to take the first date associated with the invention or underlying principle behind each item I came up with this (quotes taken from web references found with Google):

Eli Whitney - cotton gin - 1793 - "Whitney produced the first crude model of his gin in 1793"

Humphrey Davy - electric lamp - 1801 - "In 1801 Sir Humphry Davy, an English chemist, made platinum strips glow by passing an electric current through them"

James Watt - steam engine - 1764 - "Watt’s work with the steam engine began in 1764, when he was requested to repair a Newcomen steam engine used at the university."

Benjamin Franklin - lightning rod - 1747 - "In 1747 Franklin began his experiments in electricity with a simple apparatus that he received from a friend in England."

George Louis Lesage - telegraph - 1774 - "The first telegraph was demonstrated in Geneva, Switzerland in 1774 by George Louis Lesage."

Louis Pasteur - pasteurized milk - 1856 - ".. in 1856 .. Pasteur’s experiments on bacteria began, resulting in the process that still bears his name (pasteurization)."

George Stephenson - locomotive - 1814 - "Stephenson designed his first locomotive in 1814"

Guglielmo Marconi - radio - 1895 - "late in the summer of 1895, Guglielmo Marconi made the first tentative wireless transmissions"

Alexander Graham Bell - telephone - 1876 - "until 1876, when Alexander Graham Bell placed the first phone call."

Cyrus McCormick - reaper - 1831 - "By the end of the same 1831 harvest, Cyrus had the first successful demonstration of his reaper."

Thomas Edison - phonograph - 1877 - "August 12, 1877, is the date popularly given for Thomas Alva Edison's completion of the model for the first phonograph,"

I'll be the first to say that the date attributed to Benjamin Franklin seems to be a stretch given that the picture appears to be a lightning rod which he did not invent for many more years.

Now, taking the last digit of each year as an index into the inventors name we get:

I HEIR PRINCE

Triton could indeed be called the heir prince of Poseidon (depicted in the 3rd image with the matching key symbol from this puzzle).

The accepted answer is: triton

</spoiler>
The clue above the entry box means to look at the name of the hotel: datoname hotel = day to name.

So take the day of the month given in the post marks, and then take the country name on the stamps. Sometimes you'll have to figure out the country.

Apply the number to the name like this:
Nov 7 + United States = United States = S

You get "St Paul's Cathedral".

The hint from the London projection is "Photographer"

Answer: HERBERT MASON . He took the photograph of the 1940 bombing of St Paul's Cathedral in London.
From Singapore clue for composers: "City of Birth",<br>
Here is the list of cities of birth... still trying to figure out from there:

beethoven - bonn

stause - munich

ravel - ciboure

liszt - Doborján

mozart - salzburg

bach - eisenach

bizet - paris

verdi - le roncole

Notes on the music page: certain lines of the music correspond to the writers on the right hand side. Trying to figure out if the star icon and background has any relevance to this as well.
</spoiler>
<spoiler>
Notes from jnm.
Johann Strauss was born in Vienna.
Richard Strauss was born in Munich.
Liszt was born in Doborján which is now called Raiding.
Bizet was actually born in and died in Bougival near Paris.
Verdi was born in Roncole near Busseto.

Note from leonmj: The only composer of note I can find who was born in LA was John Milton Cage, composer of 4 minutes 33 seconds which is silence for 4 minutes and 33 seconds. The Dvorak of LA is a columnist.

Note from xctrex: Dvorak is also the name of a type of encoding.

Note from rieuwa: This was all my mistake, apologies... My new hypothesis:Cage's most famous work is called 4 minutes 33 seconds, which when converted to seconds is equal to 273 seconds..

It was widely hypothesized that "Cage chose the length deliberately, four minutes and thirty-three seconds being 273 seconds and absolute zero being temperature of −273 °C. " Quote from wikipedia.

Now, if you count the number of notes that appear in the puzzle:- 16*17=272... isn't that rather close to 273?

Solved: City = Los Angeles.
Clues projected on The Brandenburg Gate, Berlin.<br>
<spoiler>
The images you see all represent firsts, ie. first priniting press, first man in space, etc.

The notebook spaces do not fit the names, but the locations specific to those activities do.

The notebook spaces are filled as follows:

1. First solo transatlantic flight by Charles Lindbergh (mid-right picture) ended at Paris, France

2. First architectural arches (Brandenburg Gate event picture) are often associated with Babylon in modern day Iraq perhaps ------,IR--
<< EDIT >> Possible answer: I came across this website. Down about 3/4 of the way is a reference to Ctesiphon Arch in Iraq. Names that reference it are Tisfun, Madain (Mada'in), and Kasfia. This would be almost enough answer to me.

3. First cave paintings (bottom right picture) found in LaScaux, France

4. (unknown) Should be associated with planets or solar system (Brandenburg Gate event picture) and fit the form ------,-------TA- (could be Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan or Uzbekistan)
<< EDIT 24 JAN 2007 - Answer is Tyuratam, KazakhsTAn. Tyuratam is another name for Baikonur. This should eliminate #8's original clue below. #8 is associated with solar system / Sun >>

5. First airplane, Wright Flyer (top right picture) flew in Kitty Hawk, NoRth CarOlina

6. First constitution or democracy was established when King John was forced to sign the Magna Carta (bottom-mid picture) at RUnnymede, ENglanD

7. First printing press (bottom left picture) was built by Johannes Gutenberg in Mainz, GErmAny

8. First man in space was Yuri Gagarin (top center picture) launched from BaikonUr, Russia (Note: this should be an 'R') [?? Baikonur is in Kazakhstan or USSR, not Russia]
<< EDIT 24 JAN 2007 - Answer seems to be FromboRk, Poland. This is where Nicolas Copernicus, "the astronomer who formulated the first modern heliocentric theory of the solar system", died. >>

9. First major cosmic revision since Newton was Albert Einstein (bottom left picture) who lived in Bern, SwiTzerland when he published his most important work

10. First assembly line was the Ford Model T factory (top left picture) built in Detroit, MicHigan

Note that 8 of the entries come from in-game picture while the last 2 come from the live event pictures from Berlin.

If you fill in the blanks, you get FIRST AROUND EARTH. The answer is MAGELLAN.
THIS TRICKSTER SHARES HIS NAME WITH THAT OF A SILVER BANDED HOLY RELIC.

That yields the answer "Blackstone", who was both a magician and is a holy relic of the Islamic faith.
</spoiler><br>
<spoiler>
From Neowin by crimsonhead:
Ok here's how i got stage...

I started to convince myself that blackstone was the only possible answer. So I used the code and found the symbols for BLACKSTONE. I then followed a common pattern of Length 5 and Width 4 and tried to connect the boxes. After I did that, I put the letters into an unscrambler and tried all the words until I finally got to STAGE.

VirtuconDG: If you write it as:
BLACK

STONE

take the boxes from the cipher and connect columnes (B over S, L over T, etc) you get, in block letters, STAGE.

By arranging the ciphers for "Black" and "Stone" above each other, you achieve this:

Combining the top and bottom ciphers together yields the word "STAGE", in block letters.
When the cursor is passed over each postcard, there is a rumbling nose and the image disappears in a cloud of dust. It reappears shortly afterwards.

Also note that originally, the fourth postcard was of a train, but was substituted with the woman shown above after a day or so.

The corresponding sky-writing clue  was:<br>
...........<br>
.....<br>
COPPERFIELD<br>
NICOL<br>
The fourth magician I believe is Charles Nicol. Charles Nicol performed a trick called "The Throne of Mystery" and the picture in the link I found shows a "lady" in a chair.
The prompt here reads "Close your eyes, look first to the skies." <br>

<spoiler>
The trick to the puzzle is that the cards are marked. The wheel in the upper-left corner of each card tells you the number of the card, and the small circle mid-way up on the left side of each card tells you the suit. <br>
The very last skywriting clue reads: <br><br>
1:00=A ... SW=HEART <br>
This is the "key" to reading the card markings. The wheel reads like a clock, with the 1 o'clock position signifying the Ace, the 2 o'clock the two, etc. The small circle tells the suit, depending on where the quarter-circle is placed. The south-west (lower left) means Hearts. The remaining suits have to be found through deduction. <br>

So, the first card is the two of hearts. <br>
The next card is a four. Since the only four is the four of diamonds, we now know that the north-west position signifies diamonds. <br>
The third card is the six of hearts. <br>
The fourth card is an Ace. The only two aces are the Ace of Spades and the Ace of Diamonds. Since the quarter-circle is not in the NW position, it cannot be a diamond, so it must be the Ace of Spades. <br>
The final card is a five. Since the quarter-circle is in a new position and one of each other suit is already present, it must be a club, the five of clubs. <br>
Clicking on each of the five cards in the upper row in order will reveal the true cards and enter the following into the "Submit" field: <br>
2:H, 4:D, 6:H, A:S, 5:C<br>
You can also simply enter the above into the field and hit "Submit."
Clicking on the Rabbit's footprints opens a browser with a map of a region in Pennsylvania with 8 numbered markers. <br>
<spoiler>
The box symbol in the upper-left-hand corner corresponds to a skywriting clue. <br>
The clue has a series of directional arrows: <br>
Down, Left, Left, Down, Right, Down, Left <br>
Start at the #1 marker. By following the directions to the points marked on the map, you end at the sixth marker. Zoom in and you'll see that it points to a town by the name of: <br>
PRESTO
